2010 Canoe Trip by Michael Orlowski:
This year, as part of the MWCPC’s Youth Education Program, seven youths were offered the opportunity to canoe Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario on the Canadian-American border. This year, we were graced with generally beautiful weather and essentially no mosquitoes, which as a first timer, I’ve heard can be pretty nasty. Our six days were spent touring a 75 mile trip loop through both well traveled and close to untouched terrain. The route included everything from half mile portages and trying straits against the wind, to dead calm evenings and waterfalls to cool off in. As far as the route was concerned, I could not have imagined a more perfect lake trip setting.
Part of the canoe trip experience is learning how to camp and canoe from people who actually have knowledge and years of experience. Having not personally done a trip similar to this one before, I had a lot to learn, and I am incredibly thankful to have had Chips and Kim to teach me so much about canoe tripping. From learning how to pack, portaging and steering canoes, setting up tarps and lashing tents during thunderstorms, to learning to stay calm in ugly situations and remembering to bring dessert, I know myself and others will take away tips and skills from this trip that will stay with us for a lifetime.
Finally, we were blessed with an awesome group of people that really made the trip a great bonding and friendship building experience. At the same time, I believe that all of us learned something about ourselves that we didn’t know before, plus new friends and many memories.
On behalf of this year’s canoe trippers, Sarah Albano, Sarah Fox, Nathan Kingstad, Nahaniel McFarland, Chelsea Mills, Lucas Paulson, and myself, Michael Orlowski, we would like to extend a huge thank you to Kim Dumask, our dessert baking, level headed chaperon, to Pastor Chips for all his time spent in preparation and all the skills of wilderness tripping and the Spiritual and Christian education given to us, not only on this trip but through his years as a youth leader, and to all of you who supported the trip, because without all of your time, effort and contributions, a truly amazing experience like this would not have been possible. Thank you!
